If you are an Active Member who becomes Medicare Eligible (e.g., due to turning Age 65) who is currently employed with an SHBP Employing Entity, you may make the following coverage changes:

* Change Your Plan Option or Tier

* Terminate your dependents SHBP coverage

* Terminate your SHBP coverage

You may declare the event by notifying SHBP Member Services of becoming Medicare Eligible by taking the following steps:

  • Within 31 days of Your Becoming Medicare Eligible...

    Within 31 days of your child’s loss of coverage, you must declare the event by notifying SHBP Member Services by:

    1. Select the Manage Info button within the Manage Information tile
    2. Then select Edit below your name or your Dependent’s name
    3. Select the Medicare Information tab to enter your Medicare Part B information
    4. Click Save to submit your Medicare Part B

    • Contacting SHBP Member Services at 1-800-610-1863, Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET

    If you fail to timely notify SHBP Member Services, you must wait until the next Open Enrollment period, unless you experience another Qualifying Event or Special Enrollment Event to make a change to your coverage. 

  • Within 45 days after you notify SHBP Member Services...

    If your Medicare Eligibility is due to turning Age 65, no documentation is required as long as you continue to work, however, please visit the Planning to Retire: Retirement FAQs.

    If your Medicare Eligibility is not due to Turning Age 65, within 45 days after you notify SHBP Member Services, you must provide your or your covered Dependent’s Medicare Part B information to SHBP.

  • Please Note that Once You Retire …

    Please note that once you retire you cannot add dependents to your coverage unless you experience a Qualifying Event or Special Enrollment Event.

    Additionally, if you terminate your SHBP coverage and fail to reenroll during the Open Enrollment period at least one year prior to your Retirement, you are no longer eligible to participate in the SHBP unless you return to work with a SHBP Employing Entity in a benefits eligible position.
