Work Life Balance: Care Instructions

Feeling like there’s never enough time for work, family, or the things you enjoy is common. If you often feel overwhelmed, there are steps you can take to restore balance. Follow-up care with your doctor is also important if stress is affecting your health.

Manage your time

  • Prioritize what matters. Avoid taking on too much, and learn to say no.
  • Set small goals. Break big tasks into smaller steps and use a planner.
  • Ask for help. Share responsibilities with family, friends, or coworkers.
  • Leave work at work. Protect personal time. Use flexible schedules if available.
  • Unplug. Set boundaries with phones and email so work doesn’t spill into personal time.

Lower job stress

Job stress can impact both work and home life. Common sources include deadlines, heavy workloads, unclear duties, lack of control, job insecurity, and monotonous tasks. Identify what’s bothering you and consider talking with your boss. Even small adjustments can help.

Use workplace programs

Many employers offer options to support balance, such as:

  • Flexible schedules
  • Time off for family or education
  • Working from home
  • Employee assistance programs
  • On-site or subsidized child care

Check what your company offers or discuss possibilities with your manager.
