Stress Management for Men
Stress is something many men experience but may not always talk about. Long hours, family responsibilities, financial pressures and everyday demands can build up quickly. It is important for men to find healthy ways to manage and reduce stress such as:
- Finding support/ talking to a friend or doctor
- Exercising regularly
- Getting plenty of sleep
- Practicing mindfulness or meditation
- Connecting with community or faith-based organizations
How does long-term stress impact the body?
Chronic stress can lead to serious health problems, changing the way your body works. Stress hormones can:
- Increase your risk for a variety of physical health problems including digestive issues, headaches, muscle tension, heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke and weight gain.
- Increase your risk for a variety of mental health problems including anxiety, depression, sleep problems, memory and concentration impairment.
- Increase your risk for disease either due to changes in your body or substance related coping behaviors such as smoking or consuming alcohol.
- Suppress your body’s immune system, making it more difficult to recover from illnesses.
