Important Update Regarding Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia (BCBSGa) and Piedmont Healthcare

On April 3, 2018, Governor Nathan Deal released a statement regarding the pending negotiations between Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia (BCBSGa) and Piedmont Healthcare. As further direction to the Department of Community Health (DCH) and the State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP), Governor Deal also announced that the State and the University System of Georgia would absorb out-of-network claims for affected employees for up to 30 days in order to minimize patients’ financial burdens. April 1 marked the beginning of the 30 days.

As additional information for all BCBSGa members who receive services through Piedmont Healthcare, please note the following:

  • Governor Nathan Deal has announced that SHBP BCBSGa members who present for covered services at any Piedmont Healthcare facility with Piedmont physicians will continue to be covered as “in network” for up to 30 days until April 30, 2018.
  • BCBSGa Members’ cost shares (co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance) will remain the same as they were prior to April 1, 2018.
  • Services that are eligible for “continuity of care” (i.e., maternity, oncology) will be honored, as appropriate.
  • Piedmont and BCBSGa continue to actively negotiate.
